AI for beginners: your first hour with Claude
In just one hour, with zero tech background, you can create a free Claude account, type your very first question and get a genuinely useful answer back. You will also understand what artificial intelligence is actually good for. No jargon, no complicated software to install, no hidden costs.
What is Claude AI in 30 seconds?
Picture a friend who has read every book, manual and encyclopedia ever written. You can ask them anything, in plain English, the same way you would text a family member. They answer patiently, explain things however you want (with examples, summaries, step by step…) and never get tired or impatient.
That is Claude AI. It is not a robot, not a complicated app, and you do not need to be a computer expert. It is simply a chat window where you type and an artificial intelligence writes back. It runs in your regular web browser, just like Gmail or your bank website.
Your first step: create a free account (3 minutes)
Take your time. These steps are easier than booking a doctor's appointment online.
- Open your browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari, whatever you use) and type: claude.ai
- Click the button that says "Sign up".
- Enter your email address (the same one you already use). You can also sign in with your Google account if you have one.
- Check your email inbox. A six-digit code will arrive. Copy it and paste it into the page.
- Type your name. Done. You are in.
Your first question: the perfect beginner prompt
A "prompt" is simply what you type into the chat. The clearer you are, the better Claude will answer. For your first hour, here are three concrete things to try. Copy, paste, and change the part in brackets to fit your real situation.
Prompt 1: Ask for an explanation of something tricky
> "Explain (electronic invoicing / blockchain / artificial intelligence) to me as if I were 12 years old. Use examples from daily life."
Prompt 2: Ask for help with an email
> "Help me write a short, polite email asking my manager for a day off next Friday because I have a medical appointment. Keep the tone friendly but professional."
Prompt 3: Ask for a recipe using what you already have
> "Give me a simple dinner recipe using only these ingredients I have at home: eggs, tomato, onion, bread and cheese. It should be for two people and take less than 20 minutes."
Press Enter and watch the magic. If you do not love the answer, just ask for another one: "make it shorter", "give me a funnier version", "explain it again with a different example".
What NOT to expect in your first hour
Let's be honest: Claude is a very powerful tool, but it is not magic. Here is what you should keep in mind from day one:
- It is not always right about recent dates or specific facts. It can get prices, new laws or statistics wrong. Always double-check important data against official sources.
- Sometimes it "hallucinates". That is the word we use when it confidently invents something. If it gives you a book title, a link or a direct quote, verify it yourself.
- It does not replace your doctor, lawyer or accountant. It can help you understand concepts or prepare questions, but real decisions belong to a real professional.
- It will not hack anything or do scary things. It is just a chat. All it does is write text back.
Your hour 2, 3, 4: what to learn next
Once you have tried those three prompts, a thousand new ideas will pop into your head. That is completely normal. The question is: where do I go next without getting lost?
At LearnAIFast we have built a free course designed for exactly this moment: Introduction to Claude Desktop. Short lessons, in plain language, with no jargon, that teach you to use Claude for real-life tasks: drafting emails, summarizing long documents, preparing a presentation or planning a trip.
You can take it at your own pace. No tough exams, no strange stuff. Just practical examples you can apply the same day.
You can start it here: Free introduction course to Claude.
